About
Incoming Graduate Student at UPenn, Scientific Computing, Curious Researcher, Skier, Photographer.
I'm Xuanqi (Henry) Wei, an incoming graduate student in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania, where I'll be pursuing an MSE in Scientific Computing. I graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.Sc. in Mathematics & Statistics and a minor in Computer Science. My work centers on uncertainty-aware statistical modeling and turning rigorous inference into actionable, real-world decisions.
My undergraduate research at UofT's Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics applied Gaussian Mixture Models with MCMC sampling to determine stellar membership of the Ursa Minor Dwarf Galaxy, integrating orbital dynamics to identify genuine member stars in high-contamination outskirt regions.
In industry, I optimized warehouse logistics at WinTrust for Li-Ning by training a seq2seq Transformer on 300M+ orders, shortening pick-and-dispatch time by 12.4%. I also launched an internal startup building a low-cost ArcFace-based facial recognition system on Raspberry Pi, achieving over 99% accuracy across 20 stations.
Outside academics, I'm a CSIA Level II certified ski instructor at Mount St. Louis Moonstone and Blue Mountain Resort, a classical piano player, and an avid photographer who finds inspiration around the world.
What I'm Doing Now
- Preparing to join UPenn SEAS this fall for an MSE in Scientific Computing
- Building a ski forecasting framework with OpenSkiMap — time series models for crowd flow and wait times, plus spatial-temporal models for snow conditions
- Completed research on Ursa Minor dwarf galaxy stellar membership inference
- Exploring uncertainty-aware deep learning and trustworthy AI frameworks
- Teaching skiing at Mount St. Louis on weekends
